Description

ENGLISH ABSTRACT The themes of Max Frisch's works include youth, crises of identity and culture, and relationships between humans and technology. These themes are ultimately tied to the conception of life and death he explored throughout his career, from before 1945 until his death in 1991, especially in his late play Triptychon (1978). As the title suggests, Frisch connects three scenes in a triptych: a funeral service, a scene in the underworld, and a man's imagined conversation with his deceased lover about their life together. Frisch enthusiastically illustrates the importance of experiencing different spiritual transformations in life as a strategy for facing the inevitable truth of death. This essay first surveys Frisch's overall engagement with the theme of life and death. Secondly, it examines the operation of this theme in Triptychon, comparing published versions of the text with Frisch's own draft in Max Frisch--Archiv Zurich. Finally, it draws some conclusions about Frisch's philosophical intentions in this literary work.
